Many people are generally scared of death. For some, it is actually a taboo to speak about this. Thus, we could say that for those who do their trade in issues in connection with death, these persons must be really of a special breed. One group of individuals who make a living during death are the undertakers.

Most of us generally avoid anything related to death and its symbolism. Nonetheless, without funeral directors, the responsibility of laying our dearly departed to rest would be a very difficult undertaking indeed. Could just any other person become a good funeral director? Here are some attributes and skills that an individual must have in order to become a good funeral director.

Undertakers, also known as "directors", are experts who manage activities and services associated with funerals. Mentioned below are a few of the essential skills and personal qualities that undertakers must possess to rise in their job.

An undertaker must be energetic and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he has to be available 24 hours a day. He should be ready to work away from his office as the task requires him to be at the place where he is needed.

An undertaker should be a good communicator and a patient listener. With clients hailing from so many religions, traditions and cultures, he should be able to interact with and handle each one of them efficiently. Understanding and sympathy will be of great importance as he performs his job. But he will need to offer support to the grieving family and must remain strong and mentally detached to be able to do so.

Undertakers should be serious and dignified by nature, but should not look gloomy or morose, as this may intensify the grief of the family members of the deceased.

Knowledge of various religious customs, rituals and beliefs and due respect for these greatly helps undertakers find success in their profession. As various people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is better to have knowledge of these. An undertaker must have good managerial and organizational skills. He must also possess leadership abilities and should be able to interact with a wide range of people - from the clergy members to the local florist.

Legalities and other official formalities to be followed in case of a death must be familiar to the undertaker who will have to get the requisite approvals etc for the funeral ceremonies and other related matters. He will have to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed with respect to collecting death certificates or insurance payments.

Finally, an undertaker should know how to drive and must possess an appropriate driving license, as he may have to drive vehicles to transport the deceased.
