Anti Graffiti Coating And The Fight against Vandals

By Anthony Blowick

Some graffiti is pretty, a colorful embellishment of otherwise drab surrounds. Such art work, though attractive, still forms a kind of vandalism. Other examples include crude language, love hearts with the names of enamored teenagers, lewd drawings and scribbles of all sorts. Past efforts to clean such graphics from public buildings and surfaces often included a lot of scrubbing or re-painting. Modern custodial staff and city councils can applaud the invention of anti graffiti coating which may prevent such hard work.

Such products include sacrificial coatings. These form a clear barrier over a tunnel wall or the side of a building. Paint, marker, blood and other marks still adhere to the surface of the coating, not the original surface. Both vandalism and coating come off when the building is cleaned.

This can save a structure from permanent damage. Such a method can also prevent excessive cost if vandalism forms only a short term problem in the life of a building. On the other hand, repeating the cycle on a regular basis may become expensive, even damaging to a surface.

Semi-sacrificial coating is also called a safety shield. This product will protect the pores of a surface. Staff can remove paint, felt or other staining from this surface twice usually before the coating has to come away with the graffiti. A combination of pressure washing and solvent form the most effective means of cleaning a safety-coated building.

For a more expensive approach, cities and building owners might consider permanent protective coating. Initial outlay may seem too much in comparison with sacrificial coatings, but in the long term the permanent type may save you money and man power. A permanent coating, if applied correctly, should last as long as your structure lasts.

Among the ingredients used in these coatings are fluorine and polyurethane. Paint will not permanently attach itself to these substances. To remove graffiti, less labor is required plus a small amount of solvent. The coating and original surface remain intact.

With the move towards more environmentally friendly methods of cleaning, ecologically friendly products to protect surfaces against graffiti meet an important need. These are water-based substances. In some instances, vandalism is easily cleaned off with only soap and water. In others, a mild solvent or paint thinner may be required.
